Securities Web Page

Product Help Banner.png

CCH provides a web page through which users can request new securities for the data feed. The current feed contains around 50,000 securities. From time to time users require extra securities that are not in the feed. The securities are added to the securities masterfile and are available for download the next day, usually by 11am. The CCH Securities web page is also useful for searching for securities.

Accessing the Securities Web Page

To access the facility, either:

  • Log into the Support web site
  • Select Resources > CGT Security Codes

or click the link Website when searching for a security in CGT &DS,

or click on the link here.

The screen can be used either to search for a security or request new ones.

Searching for a Security

To search for a security:

  • Select the Fiscal Year of the Masterfile.
  • Enter one of the security code fields, i.e. SEDOL, CCH code or ISIN code and press Search.
  • Alternatively enter the first word of the Company Name and possibly further words from the Company Name or the Security Description and press Search. (More details are given below).
  • The screen may go grey while searching takes place and then the matching securities are displayed.

In the above screen we searched for “wolters” in 2016/17. 4 SEDOLs are displayed for the EUR0.12 shares and all have the same ISIN code. This indicates that the SEDOLs represent different listings of the same security.

When searching by security name, enter all, or the start, of the Security name, e.g. Marks, for Marks & Spencer, into the Security field. Matching securities are displayed below. The first word entered must match the start of the Company Name, but later words can match words in either the Company Name or the Description. For instance, entering "FIDELITY INC"  matches securities such as "Fidelity Funds / Income Units"  where “Income Units” is in the Description field. It does not match "Professional Life Fidelity Inc Units", because although "Fidelity" is present, it is not the first word. This option is useful for searching for funds or gilts, e.g. "Treasury 2030".

Note

Sometimes as in this case, several securities have exactly the same Company Name and Description. There are two possible reasons for this.

  • A security can have different CGT or income treatments, e.g.  a user can receive dividends in sterling or in another currency. In this case CCH creates "Mirror" codes to reflect the alternative treatment. If SEDOL codes are in use then mirror codes start with a 9; if CCH codes are in use they start with a Z. (Codes starting with a 9 or a Z and called "9 codes".) CCH is gradually converting the descriptions of the mirror codes to give an indication of why they were set up. Note that most "9 codes" are not mirror codes. They are created for other purposes, e.g. for unlisted securities. If it is not clear which code to use, use the code which is not the "9-code".
  • A second reason for duplicate securities appearing is that a single security can be quoted on several exchanges and so have several SEDOL codes, although all the SEDOLs refer to the same ISIN. Usually the only difference between the codes is that prices are quoted in the currency of the exchange, but since CGT&DS converts all prices to sterling, little difference is visible in practice. Most users just select the first of the matching codes, as that is more likely to be a UK code.

Adding a Security to the Masterfile

The rightmost column shows a green tick if the security is already in the “user universe”, i.e. the data feed, and a red cross if it is not.

To add a new security, tick the tickbox in the leftmost column and click Promote to user universe.

Some securities in the database already have a CCH Code allocated to them even if they are not in the current Masterfile. In these cases the new CCH Code is known immediately. Securities that do not have a CCH Code are allocated a code as soon as the security is promoted to the user universe. In either case, the CCH code can be used immediately in data entry in CGT&DS, but no details of the security will be available until the next day’s version of the Masterfile is downloaded. When the new CCH code is entered in data entry the message "SECURITY xxxxxxx DOES NOT EXIST" but this is not an error and does not prevent the transaction being saved.

Add Unlisted Company

This option is used for securities that do not have a SEDOL code. The user must enter more fields in this case. Specifically:

  • Security Type. Usually Other.
  • Dividend Type. Usually Dividends from UK Companies. The data feed cannot provide dividend information. So in practice, dividends are entered manually into CGT & DS.

The newly added security is available for selection in the next day’s Masterfile.

Notes

  • Unlisted securities are assigned a CCH code that begins with a Z and a "dummy SEDOL" code that begins with a 9.
  • The Masterfile does not contain dividend data or prices for unlisted securities. Users need to enter dividends manually through the Dividends screen

Add SEDOLs/ISINs from File

This option is similar to Add SEDOL/ISIN except that a list of securities can be added in a single operation. The securities to be added should be listed in a text file. The text file can be created in Notepad or by saving an Excel worksheet with only column A as a “CSV file”. The securities can be identified by SEDOL or ISIN code or different codes for different securities. The text file has no header row.

  • The file is selected using the Browse button.
  • Then select the Fiscal Year and click Load.
  • The securities read are listed on the screen with an indication of whether they are available in the Masterfile for that Fiscal Year.
  • Two filters are available at the top of the list:
    • Errors Filter. Used to select whether rows with errors are displayed, e.g. rows with an invalid SEDOL.
    • Universe Filter. Used to select whether to show securities that are already available in the data feed.
  • The securities to add to the Masterfile are ticked in the tickbox in the leftmost column.
  • Then click Promote to user universe.
